Director of Risk Management

North Star Behavioral Health is one of Alaska’s premier mental health facilities offering hope and healing for children, teens and adults who struggle with psychiatric or substance abuse issues. The Risk Management Director promotes, coordinates and performs risk management activities within the Hospital by assisting staff and employees in understanding the scope, objectives and procedures of the hospital, and in utilizing various reporting mechanisms. In order to carry out these functions the Risk Management Director accesses all necessary and relevant hospital and medical staff data including, but not limited to committee minutes, medical records, medical staff files, and other hospital operating data. The structure and functions of the Risk Management Programs are designed to comply with guidelines and standards of JCAHO, other regulatory agencies.

Risk Management

  1. Ensures appropriate and timely reporting of occurrences by maintaining a Healthcare Peer Review Reporting system.
  2. Analyzes and trends data while identifying actual and potential risk situations and facilitates the determination of causative factors.
  3. Refers occurrences for follow‑up to appropriate department or medical committee; ensures that all Level III/IV are referred to the Peer Review Committee.
  4. Performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas in concert with hospital's safety (EOC) program committee objectives.
  5. Receives and investigates reports of product problem to determine appropriate response and establish record keeping responsibilities. In the event of patient injury, established direction from Corporate Risk Management in the appropriate action for defense strategy.

Risk Reduction

  1. Networks with department managers and medical staff to:
    1. implement system changes aimed at optimally reducing or eliminating causative factors and
    2. risk reduction/loss prevention problem solving and program development designed to benefit the clinical aspects of patient care and safety.
  2. Interfaces with the Patient Advocate specific to patient complaints and assesses/recommends action, on those, which may be a source of potential litigation and in conjunction with hospital administration recommends actions when possible to resolve with patient and/or family any grievances against hospital perceived as potential liability claims.
  3. Assesses liability and probability of legal action and Identifies particular practices having legal connotations to target planning of preventive and corrective measures
  4. Is available to resolve treatment issues, including patient refusal of treatment, consent issues, HIPPA violations, AMA's, etc. under direct supervision of Administrator, Corporate Legal Council, and Corporate Risk Management
Qualifications

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or relates field and a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in quality and risk management within a psychiatric treatment facility OR a combination of training and experience. A string knowledge of Joint Commission, State of Alaska, CMS standards, and any other applicable federal and state laws and regulations
