Job Description

Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in a meaningful and impactful career? Would you like to contribute to protecting people and the environment and accelerating a statewide transition to sustainable pest management? The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) could be the place for you!

Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) Worker Health and Safety (WHS) Branch is looking for a Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) for the Human Health Mitigation Program (HHMP). Mitigation of human health risks involves protecting workers and the public by developing measures to reduce unacceptable exposures and hazards associated with pesticide use. HHMP takes a multi-disciplinary approach to developing risk mitigation strategies by collecting and evaluating data from various sources including local, state, and federal entities. These strategies involve comprehensive evaluations of pesticide use practices and label requirements, assessments of risk, and, if necessary, development and implementation of risk mitigation measures. The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) independently provides expert scientific support and analysis in the areas of toxicology, human risk assessment, exposure assessment, and exposure monitoring, and conducts a variety of difficult tasks directly related to the development of mitigation strategies for pesticides.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating existing toxicological information such as acute and chronic toxicity, indicators of carcinogenicity, and port-of-entry effects, as well as experimental studies and other sources of data on pesticide exposure as related to human health in order to inform the development of mitigation measures to address exposure concerns.
  • Reviewing state and federal exposure assessments, risk assessments, protocols, and guidelines to ensure implementation of sound scientific practice.
  • Preparing clear, complete, and technically accurate reports and recommendations, and peer reviewing technical papers for publication.
  • Assisting in the development of protocols for field studies conducted by WHS to gather data on pesticide exposure and participating in field studies to measure human pesticide exposure and pesticide residues.
  • Reviewing protocols for field studies to be conducted by DPR or the registrants, including extensive literature research and interaction with other agencies and organizations in the scientific community.
